The manual suggests building the tail section first. This makes sense, as the components are fairly simple, they involve most of the same processes as the rest of the airplane, and they are small enough
that if you screw it up, you can just build a replacement. I spent about 6 hours going over the plans for the horizontal and vertical stabilizers, the elevator, and the rudder. A lot of this time was working out how
much of what size wood I needed to order. Since I don't have major woodworking tools, and Wicks Aircraft has easy ordering online, I am going to order most of my wood cut to dimension and I can cut it to length.
I am going with all english dimensions. The plans for the F-12 have dimensions in metric and english, but they stress that you should not mix the two. Some of the wood dimensions needed are not available
exactly from Wicks, so I ordered the next size up and will borrow a friends table saw to rip it slightly smaller. I placed the first wood order on Sept. 15, Wicks sent me an email that my order was filled on the 22nd
and it arrived on the 26th. Pretty good service. But I had no odd dimensions or extra large pieces. |
